If you need an explanation, I haven't been doing my job, ne? Go back and read the personality section again. Well, I made a shrine because I think there's a critical shortage of Kaoru shrines. And I think she deserves several. It's not her personality itself, but her characterization, that makes Kaoru so appealing, and makes her stand out among anime heroines. No, it's not unusual for an anime girl to have a temper, but it is unusual for her to have a goal in life other than dessert. She's violent, but she doesn't spend most of her time slapping people for perceived pervertedness. It's not unusual for her to be unable to cook... but it also makes sense that she would cook badly. She's impatient, she has other things to do, and for the most part, there have been other people around to take care of it.

I suppose that's the easiest way to sum it up; Kaoru makes sense as a character. Although she's as capable of superdeforming and zooming about angrily as anyone else, she exists mostly as a well-defined, dramatic heroine. Her anger, sorrow, emotional attachment to people, all make sense. Others, even those I really like, are quite the opposite. Miaka, for instance, veers back and forth between comic relief and high melodrama. Hitomi simps about hopelessly at first, mooning over Allen and taking virtually everything as attempted rape. Deedlit has the attention span of a small cat. I love Fushigi Yuugi, Escaflowne and Lodoss... but I'm not making shrines for their heroines. And another thing, something all female Kaoru fans cite: She doesn't just prance around providing fan-service. She spends most of her time dressed, and I mean *really* dressed. That's a real kimono she's wearing. In my class on Japanese culture, someone asked our professor if modern Japanese women ever wore kimonos. He answered "They don't know how! They have to take classes." (I wonder about this. Anime girls in modern-day shows seem to wear kimonos once in a while, and apparently they're sexy. "Even if she's my daughter, she has so much sex appeal in that kimono..." Maybe it's fantasy. From what I've seen, real school uniform skirts are MUCH longer than Hitomi's or Kagome's.) Of course, the "she's not nekkid" argument doesn't much matter to most guys. She does have male fans, doesn't she? Or do the guys prefer Belldandy types? There's just no justice in the world if that's true. You could probably call Kaoru Belldandy's exact opposite. Even down to her fan response. People love Belldandy because she's "perfect;" I love Kaoru because she's not.

I also love Kaoru because of many of the reasons she's hated. So she cries, and laughs, and hits people... these are flaws? She says what she thinks and acts on her feelings, and if you ask me these are damned good things. I'm going to repeat what I said in my bias piece about a spoiler character - If you can repress your feelings totally, you just didn't have very strong feelings to begin with.
